DJI Unveils Osmo 360: 8K at 50fps Square Sensors 4K120 Single-Lens Recording & More

The DJI Osmo 360 features dual 1/1.1″ square sensors paired with f/1.9 lenses, enabling panoramic video capture at up to 8K 50fps, as well as single-lens shooting at 5K 4:3 30fps or 4K 4:3 120fps. Compatible with the magnetic mount and batteries of the Osmo Action 5 Pro, the Osmo 360 is now available starting at €479.99.

With today’s launch, DJI steps into a brand-new product category—360 cameras. The Osmo 360 is the company’s first-ever entry into this space. But can it stand up to established players like Insta360 and their latest X5 model? Let’s dive into the Osmo 360’s specs and capabilities.

Osmo 360 Sensors – Larger, Square-Format Design

The camera uses two newly developed 1/1.1″ CMOS sensors with a square 1:1 aspect ratio. According to DJI, each sensor offers an effective image area similar to that of a 1-inch 4:3 sensor, delivering more surface area for improved image quality.

Thanks to the square sensor design, there’s significantly less pixel waste compared to traditional 4:3 sensors. The only unused areas are the corners, where the 180° lenses project a full image circle onto the sensor. DJI claims this approach increases sensor utilization by up to 25%, which also helps reduce overall power consumption.

The sensors have 2.4μm pixels, delivering a maximum panoramic photo resolution of 15520 × 7760 (120 MP). Each dual lens has an f/1.9 aperture and covers just over 180° field of view.

Video Recording up to 8K 50fps Panoramic or 4K 120fps Single-Lens

For panoramic video using both sensors and lenses capturing the full 360°, the Osmo 360 offers these resolutions and frame rates:

  • 8K: 7680 × 3840 at 24/25/30/48/50fps
  • 6K: 6000 × 3000 at 24/25/30/48/50/60fps
  • 4K: 3840 × 1920 at 100fps

Beyond 360° mode, the camera features a single-lens mode, enabling faster image processing. This allows recording up to 5K at 60fps or 4K at 120fps with a 155° field of view (or 170° in ultra-wide video mode). Users can switch between the front and rear lenses while recording without stopping, which is ideal for vlogging.

Single-lens video specs include:

  • 5K (4:3): 5120 × 3840 at 25/30fps
  • 5K (16:9): 5120 × 2880 at 25/30/50/60fps
  • 4K (4:3): 3840 × 2880 at 25/30/50/60fps
  • 4K (16:9): 3840 × 2160 at 25/30/50/60fps
  • 2.7K (4:3): 2688 × 2016 at 25/30/50/60fps
  • 2.7K (16:9): 2688 × 1512 at 25/30/50/60fps
  • 4K (4:3): 3840 × 2880 at up to 120fps (ultra-wide video)
  • 4K (16:9): 3840 × 2160 at up to 120fps (ultra-wide video)
  • 2.7K (4:3): 2688 × 2016 at up to 120fps (ultra-wide video)
  • 2.7K (16:9): 2688 × 1512 at up to 120fps (ultra-wide video)

In addition to standard panoramic and single-lens modes, the Osmo 360 includes SuperNight, Selfie, Hyperlapse, and Timelapse modes. Stabilization modes HorizonSteady and RockSteady are also supported. Alongside support for microSDXC cards up to 1TB, the camera offers 105GB of built-in storage.

DJI states the camera can capture up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range. Video files max out at 170Mbps bitrate and are saved in MP4 (HEVC compression) or OSV format—the panoramic video format used for post-production with DJI’s software such as DJI Mimo (mobile app) or DJI Studio.

DJI Studio is a desktop application offering a full set of editing tools, and there’s also a Premiere plugin to streamline the workflow. DJI Mimo’s GyroFrame feature allows users to adjust the 360° video composition through motion control, while intelligent tracking can lock onto and follow people, vehicles, pets, and more.

DJI Osmo 360 – Body, Battery, and Mounting

The DJI Osmo 360 weighs 183 grams (6.45 ounces). According to DJI, it can be used underwater up to depths of 10 meters (32.8 feet). Although it’s not designed for prolonged underwater use, the camera holds an IP68 waterproof rating. It can record for over 1.5 hours even in temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F).

The good news is that the Osmo 360 uses the same 1950mAh battery pack as the existing DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. This means if you already own that action camera, you can use its batteries and charger with the Osmo 360. The battery lasts up to 100 minutes when shooting 8K at 30fps. You can extend this runtime by an additional 180 minutes with the Osmo 360 Battery Extension Rod. Plus, the camera supports fast charging, reaching 50% battery in just 12 minutes.

Regarding compatibility with existing gear, the Osmo 360 features the same magnetic quick-release mount known from previous Osmo Action cameras. So, you can use your current accessories. Additionally, besides the magnetic mount, the Osmo 360 also includes a standard 1/4-20” mounting thread at the bottom.

The Osmo 360 can be controlled in three ways:

  • Using its 2.0” touchscreen with 800 nits brightness alongside three physical buttons on the camera body
  • Through the smartphone app
  • Via gesture and voice controls, such as starting or stopping recording with a simple palm gesture

It also supports OsmoAudio Direct Microphone Connection, letting users connect the camera directly to two DJI microphone transmitters without a receiver. This works exclusively with the DJI Mic 2 and DJI Mic Mini.
